A bit delayed this week – the weeks left and songs left is out of kilter and I’m feeling a bit under the kosh to get it all sorted.
What sort of pressure though? It’s all personal from here on in – nothing to do with anyone else, just that really strong sense that I really need to get this project sorted for myself first and foremost, so I can draw a line under it and say no matter what else I’ve been able to get these 52 songs written, released and recorded.
So to this week’s song – it came about once again from a snippet of conversation, this time with Mick, a bass player and singer in a local blues band. His son plays cricket with my son and we were having a chat as we do while watching Rosebud v Rye a couple of weeks ago. Mick was talking about being honesty and truth and made the comment: ‘Loneliness is the last refuge of the honest man.’
Sez I: “shit Mick, that’ll make a good song lyric – do you mind if I pinch it?”
Sez Mick: “Go for it.”
So I did, and here it is. In hindsight, it’s a bit of a follow up to last week’s song and has got a bit of that Tony Joe White thing going on!
Had a bit of media interest following on from last week’s song too, page 3 of The Frankston Times
Just as a footnote here, and I know everyone’s watching the pennies leading into Christmas, but if you’ve enjoyed any of these songs this year and want to show some love, please click on the buy button and download a song or two. Your support is much appreciated! Songs are only $1.50 each and you can buy whole albums etc, there are lots of options – would be great if you could show some love.
Lyrics:
Never shies from the solid truth, never hides from showing proof
Never talks when the deeds shine through, never knows what the words will do
There’s a takin’ on the side, a money to be made, a little bit here and a little in the shade
There’s a brown paper bag and a tap on the nose, there’s a scratch of the back and easy as she goes
When you see yourself in the mirror and you don’t know where it’s at
You know that loneliness is the last refuge of the honest man
There’s a pushing and a shove, truth speaking love, a feeling deep inside that you should never deny,
It’s easier to turn and let it slowly burn than face it head on and lessons are all gone…
When you see yourself in the mirror and you don’t know where it’s at
You know that loneliness is the last refuge of the honest man

Hey Dave , your project coming to a close. I am checking out air fares for march. Maybe aloneness instead of loneliness. I spend a lt of time alne, but do not feel lonely at all. Da Dennis
